This activity will give you insight into how larger associations or collective efforts operate, providing a broader perspective on organising impactful sustainable actions.

Working with a small team to organise individual activities is always beneficial for the environment. However, participating in larger, collective events can help you gain valuable knowledge about creating a wider public impact and collaborating with colleagues from different regions. If you aspire to promote a sustainable lifestyle, this is your opportunity to take a key role in shaping the future of our planet.

First, get inspired!

Explore how major environmental youth associations operate and achieve meaningful results in society. Find out more about YEE (Youth and Environment Europe) to learn about the current activities in Europe and how they benefit society :

Need additional hints?

Hear from Nathan, co-Director of the Youth Climate Justice Fund, as he briefly explains not only the importance of addressing current climate and environmental issues but also why the voices of young people are particularly crucial in these discussions:

Now, take action:

Through this activity, you will contribute to a larger initiative, develop skills in delegating major tasks and addressing unexpected challenges. This experience will help you become more proactive and better equipped to engage with future initiatives within your community.
  • Research the association you want to join: Whether virtually or in person, identify an initiative that resonates with you and become a part of it. Many large environmental associations regularly organise actions that you can easily join and contribute to with your unique ideas and skills. Volunteering for a short period is an excellent way to understand how these organisations operate.
  • Become a strong member of the team: Joining a team is just the beginning. To make a meaningful impact, strive to contribute significantly and leave a positive mark on the association. Avoid remaining a passive participant; instead, aim to assist to the fullest extent possible. Take on responsibilities to broaden your skills and knowledge, and learn from this enlightening experience.
  • Become part of an advocacy campaign: During your involvement with the association, take the opportunity to participate in a large-scale campaign to protect the environment. This is your time to shine and help shape the future of your country. So, don’t hesitate—raise your voice and share how the current situation can be improved in your country. Highlight the existing challenges and propose initiatives for better solutions. Feel free to be active on social media to inspire and influence other young people around you.

This badge is awarded for completing the “Engage in an Environmental Activity in Your Country” initiative. Reaching this stage demonstrates your commitment to contributing to environmental wellbeing, as well as your ability to collaborate with a larger team and gain insights into how major associations and institutions operate.

Skills and experiences gained (according to GreenComp: The European Sustainability Competence Framework):
  • Leveraging Collective Knowledge: Working in a large team will allow you to gather a wide range of ideas and solutions, benefiting from the varied experiences and skills of the group. It is always beneficial to exchange and brainstorm with a diverse team, as it helps you gain a broader perspective on your country’s current situation and identify ways to address these problems.
  • Community Engagement: Building partnerships with local communities and organisations in your country to promote sustainable practices at the local level.
  • Empowering Others Through Advocacy: This final advocacy activity will help you develop the ability to inspire and mobilise individuals or communities to take collective action for sustainability. By organising a large-scale advocacy campaign, you will interact with others and achieve beneficial results. These practices and insights can then be scaled up and applied in other regions of your country, or even on a larger, international, or European scale.

This badge demonstrates the earner’s ability to manage a group of people and communicate effectively with their team and external partners. Organising a sustainable activity helps team members strengthen their management skills and develop a sense of responsibility by adhering to specific measures and steps. This teamwork initiative aligns with European Youth Goal #10: A Sustainable Green Europe. The Cities of Learning Network partners recognise and value the badge earner’s efforts and contributions, awarding this badge after a thorough review of the submitted evidence.
